Grant for investigating Structural Change in sub-Saharan Africa
Date: | 09 February 2023 |
Hagen Kruse and Gaaitzen de Vries, together with Kei-Mu Yi and Yabo Vidogbena (both at the University of Houston), have obtained a research grant from STEG/CEPR. They will take a quantitative modelling approach to investigate the driving forces of structural change in sub-Saharan African countries. Structural change, the evolution of sectoral employment and value-added as countries develop, is one of the most important features of a country’s modernization and growth. To understand better structural change in SSA countries, their plan is to employ a state-of-the-art open economy model of structural change combined with new data in order to infer the structural shocks in each country (e.g., to sectoral productivity, domestic and foreign demand, input-output linkages, or sectoral international trade costs), and to assess the importance of these shocks and mechanisms in driving these countries’ structural change.
