Piersma, prof. dr. Theunis

Theunis Piersma is hoogleraar Trekvogelecologie. Met een internationaal onderzoeksteam onderzoekt hij de manier waarop verspreiding en aantallen wad- en weidevogels samenhangen met klimaat, voedsel, roofvijanden, ziektekiemen en hun historisch-genetische achtergrond. Het onderzoek vindt niet alleen plaats in Nederland, maar ook in Afrika, Australië, Noord- en Zuid-Amerika en Azië.  

Piersma is tevens als waddenbioloog verbonden aan het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NIOZ) op Texel. Hij is een van de grootste voorvechters van behoud van de Waddenzee. ‘Het ecologisch systeem van onze laatste wildernis wordt de laatste twintig jaar gestaag afgebroken.’

De laatste jaren houdt hij zich met name bezig met populatiestudies van de grutto. Zo is hij betrokken bij een onderzoek waarbij grutto’s met een zender in de buikholte gevolgd worden in hun broedgebied in Friesland en gedurende hun trektochten naar en van Zuid-Europa en Afrika. In 2023 toonde Piersma aan dat de trek van grutto’s is aangeleerd, en niet aangeboren. ‘Dit experiment laat duidelijk zien dat genetica niet allesbepalend is. Deze grutto’s leren vooral van hun omgeving. Ze gaan als het ware naar school.’

In 2014 ontving Piersma de prestigieuze Spinozapremie, ook wel de Nederlandse Nobelprijs genoemd. In 2017 ontving hij de Britse ornithologieprijs ‘Marsh Award for International Ornithology’ voor zijn onderzoek, gevolgd door de Godman Salvin Prize in 2020.

Piersma is een van de trekkers van het in 2023 gestarte project Waakvogels, dat vijf jaar lang informatie zal verzamelen over zes soorten die de Waddenzee aandoen. ‘De trekvogels vertellen ons iets over de toestand van het Wad’, legt Piersma uit. Door nauwkeurig te meten hoe het deze vogels jaar in jaar uit vergaat is het mogelijk te bestuderen wat bijvoorbeeld de impact van klimaatverandering is.

Om dit soort trends te ontdekken zijn langlopende metingen nodig van allerlei factoren. Het monitoren van deze vogels is een klus die te groot is voor een gewone onderzoeksgroep. Bovendien zijn het trekvogels, dus ook de gebieden waar ze overwinteren en broeden spelen een rol. Piersma heeft daarom eerder het onderzoekscentrum BirdEyes opgericht, gehuisvest in Leeuwarden. In dit internationaal centrum voor onderzoek en onderwijs op het gebied van klimaatverandering werkt de RUG samen met het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Zeeonderzoek (NIOZ), de Universiteit van Amsterdam en de Fryske Akademy.

BirdEyes maakt onder andere gebruik van de 'big data' die vogels leveren met zendertjes. Met behulp van deze technologie op de rug en poten van vogels wordt een grote hoeveelheid data vrijgegeven. Dit levert veel informatie op over de leefomstandigheden van vogels.
