FameLab
FameLab aims to discover charismatic, up-and-coming scientists who inspire people to see the world from a new perspective… in just three minutes! Since its birth at the Cheltenham Science Festival in 2005, FameLab has grown into a worldwide science communication competition. A partnership with the British Council (since 2007) made FameLab expand to 31 different countries. With more than 9000 young scientists and engineers participating so far.
Science communication is an ever-growing priority for researchers worldwide. Science communication forms a bridge between society and science, and helps to spread knowledge and create interaction. FameLab helps young scientists acquire valuable skills to communicate their work to non-scientific audiences. By doing so, researchers not only challenge common stereotypes of scientists, but also help to justify public funding for their research.
FameLab Netherlands
Since the first Dutch edition of Famelab, the University of Groningen organises a preliminary round. In preparation for the regional heat the University of Groningen offers two training sessions to the participants to further develop their three-minute-talk. At the regional FameLab heats two winners are selected to go on to the national FameLab heat. Eleven contestants have been selected for the 2020 national heat of the Netherlands. In preparation for the national heat another two day training session is offered. The winner of the national FameLab heat will go on to the international heat during the Cheltenham Science Festival, which is unfortunately cancelled due to the covid-pandemic. The program and the timeline of the FameLab 2020 edition have been adapted.
Meanwhile, the national heat took place on 10 September. You can watch the national final and announcement of the winners via the British Council website.
The jury awarded the overall FameLab Netherlands prize to Liza Cornet from Leiden University. Liza will represent the Netherlands in the FameLab International Final in November 2020 and will be competing against 19 other national winners from across the world.

Winners of the National Finals win an expenses paid trip to Cheltenham Science Festival 2-7 June 2020. Here you can meet FameLab participants from all over the world, engage with audiences and other science communicators, and immerse yourself in the vibrant festival programme. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the 2020 edition of the festival and the final have been adapted. Check the website of the British Council for the most recent updates.
