Ratna Juwita will be presenting her research on the evolution of soft law concerning the link between corruption and human rights.

Evolution is defined as the increase in quantity and/or quality in International Human Rights Institutions’ normative outputs concerning corruption and human rights in (non-legally binding) instruments.

Previous scholarly research was used as the benchmark to assess the evolution. The results indicated quantitative and qualitative evolutions in the production of the normative outputs regarding the link between corruption and human rights. The number of normative outputs produced by the respective institutions doubled and a substantial content-based evolution was identified. However, no normative output explicitly addressing corruption as a violation of human rights was found.

Considering the pivotal role of the normative outputs to guide the implementation of human rights promotion and protection, this article suggests that the International Human Rights Institutions should continue to address and further clarify the link between corruption and human rights.

Ratna Juwita

Ratna Juwita is a PhD Candidate in Transboundary Legal Studies at the faculty of Law at the University of Groningen.

Ratna graduated from Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (Sarjana Hukum, equivalent to Bachelor of Law, cum laude) in 2012. Ratna continued her master studies in International Law and the Law of International Organizations specializing in Human Rights, at the University of Groningen (LL. M) from 2013 to 2014. She also obtained a master's degree in International Law from Universitas Gadjah Mada (Magister Hukum, equivalent to Master of Law, cum laude) in 2015. Since 2015, Ratna has been an assistant professor in the Department of International Law, Faculty of Law, Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta. Ratna started her PhD studies at the faculty of Law at the University of Groningen in 2019. The Ministry of Finance funds her doctoral studies under the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan). Her research interests are the development of international law, anti-corruption, and human rights.
