Join us on 28 May at House of Connections for a lecture by Dr. Marco Janssen on Self-Governance of the Commons, exploring how communities cooperate to manage shared resources.
Abstract:
The classic notion that communities are trapped in a tragedy of the commons is well debunked, but there are still many questions on the conditions of sustainable use of shared resources such as water, electricity, and forests. In this presentation, a synthesis of experimental research is provided to understand the conditions for cooperation. Those insights are applied in using games as intervention tools to improve groundwater governance in villages in rural India in a collaborative effort with various NGOs.
Bio:
Dr. Marco Janssen is a Professor in the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University. His formal training is in Operations Research and Applied Mathematics. Janssen’s research covers different transdisciplinary domains. He studies the conditions of self-governance of shared resources in the field, the lab, cyberspace, and outer space. Using behavioral experiments, computational models, and case study comparison, his work has contributed to methodological diversity in studying the governance of the commons.
