The roots of inequality, poverty and deprivation in Africa | CoRE-IPD Summercourse

We are  inviting applications to attend the first summer school of the newly established Cluster of Research Excellence in Inequalities, Poverty, and Deprivation (CoRE IPD).

This five-day summer school will contain interactive lectures by CoRE IPD partners, including the University of Cape Town; University of Ghana; University of Nairobi; and the University of Groningen.

Research master degree students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral fellows and researchers will benefit from attending. Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss recent developments on the roots of inequality, poverty, and deprivation in Africa; and write surveys about the drivers of inequality, poverty, and deprivation in Africa.

In-person attendance at the University of Nairobi is encouraged and limited scholarship funding is available for travel and accommodation. Some parts of the summer school may be hosted online.

More about the CoRE IPD 2024 Summer School

Africa has the largest interregional differences in inequality in the world. This summer school will delve into the foundational factors that underlie and give rise to inequality, poverty, and deprivation on the continent.

While these underlying causes are intricate and multifaceted, often varying across different contexts, certain common factors persist. The summer school will deal with: 

• The historical determinants of inequality; 
• Financial inclusion; 
• (Gender) inequality;
• Political dynamics and their impact on inequality;
• Data availability to conduct empirical analysis on the roots of inequality in Africa; and 
• The normative perspectives on inequality.

The academic coordinators of the summer school are Prof. Damiano K. Manda (University of Nairobi), Prof. Robert Lensink (University of Groningen), Prof. Robert D. Osei (University of Ghana), and Prof. Murray Leibbrandt (University of Cape Town).

The CoRE IPD is one of the 20 research clusters launched by African Research Universities Alliance and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities to pioneer a new approach to equitable collaboration and capacity building.

1. Workshop attendance fee for students: Ksh 22,000  (155 Euro as per today's exchange rate)

3. Workshop attendance, online fee for students: Ksh 20,000 (152 Euro as per today's exchange rate)

4. Workshop attendance, online fee for nonstudents: Ksh 25,000  (175 Euro as  per today's exchange rate)

The fee for physical attendance includes lunches and coffee breaks for 5 days. Participants may attend a welcome diner for an additional 3000 Ksh. The fee excludes accomodation and travel costs.
