What are the consequences of climate change on migratory birds?
Dr. Maarten Loonen investigates this question in his paper 'Contrasting consequences of climate change for migratory geese: Predation, density dependence and carryover effects offset benefits of highâarctic warming.'
For over three decades, every summer Maarten Loonen travels to the archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. He and his colleagues have been collecting different types of data related to the barnacle goose in order to understand the contrastic effects of climate change on that species. The article presents how climate change impacts the population dynamics of the barnacle goose across migratory stages.
We have invited dr. Loonen, a professor in Arctic Ecology, to discuss the results and methods behind his paper.
