New BICS members Giuseppe Leo and Vincent Jassies

29 May 2024

We welcome Giuseppe Leo as a new PhD student and Vincent Jassies as a new Research Technician in the BICS group.

Giuseppe Leo's interest lies in creating spiking neural network models to investigate biological signal processing architectures. He earned his BSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy, and holds an MSc in Bioengineering with a specialization in Neuroengineering and Neurotechnologies from the University of Genoa, Italy. His PhD is part of the Stochastic Spiking Wireless Multimodal Sensory Systems (SWIMS) ERC Synergy project, which uses neuromorphic architectures to implement smart wireless multimodal sensory systems. The focal point of his PhD project is to develop novel recurrent spiking neural network (rSNN) architectures inspired by the brain of insects, leveraging their ultra-low energy consumption.

Vincent Jassies has a background in electronics, development, troubleshooting and repair. After getting his BSc in Electrical Engineering, he specialized in electrical schematics, PCB design, and programming, with expertise in ultra-low power STM32 microcontrollers, sensor readouts, and actuator control. He has worked on a hydrogen-powered VTOL drone, overseeing electrical systems, hardware, and software, with a focus on Research & Development and system communication. Previously, he programmed PLCs and developed automation tasks and gained experience in construction. His skills include designing custom hardware, diagnosing electronics, and programming in C/C# and Python. His internships involved developing automated systems and upgrading fire detection robots.
