ERC Synergy Grant - SWIMS funded

26 October 2023

In an announcement today, the European Research Council (ERC) has unveiled its decision to allocate a significant funding of 13.5 million Euros to the SWIMS project, standing for Stochastic Spiking Wireless Multimodal Sensory Systems, under the Synergy program. This innovative initiative promises to reshape the landscape of smart wireless multimodal sensory systems, fostering exceptional energy efficiency and transforming the future of the Internet of Things (IoT).

SWIMS represents a collaborative effort between four renowned researchers. Professors Elisabetta Chicca of UG, Gerhard P. Fettweis of TU Dresden, Denis Flandre of UC Louvain, and Adrian M. Ionescu of EPFL have joined forces to revolutionize sensory technology. Their project is set to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable deployment of IoT nodes while promoting economic growth and societal progress with minimal environmental impact.

At its core, SWIMS introduces a groundbreaking stochastic analog spiking neuromorphic concept, inspired by the workings of the human brain. This concept fuses memory and processing units, mimicking the operations of the brain itself, offering a novel solution for the challenges faced by sensory systems.

SWIMS is poised to be a game-changer, pioneering energy-efficient IoT sensory systems that have the potential to reduce energy consumption by over 100 times when compared to existing solutions. With these advancements, SWIMS is set to revolutionize the future of sensory system design, facilitating sustainable development and contributing to a smarter, greener world.

With the support of the ERC and the collective expertise of these distinguished researchers, SWIMS is poised to drive innovation and sustainable technological advancement in the world of IoT and sensory systems.
