Companies and students find short internship nonsense
More and more students have trouble with finding an internship of ten weeks. School says students should do a ten week internship. But companies prefer interns to stay for five or six months.
Stageplaza says: in our database are many students that are searching an internship for ten weeks. Unfortunately, we have an increasingly hard time placing the student even for topstudents it’s difficult "tells Dorus de Bruyn manager Sales at Stageplaza. "Companies indicate that they would rather invest in an intern who is working for a longer period of time."
A common reason behind this is that it takes a month for interns to be settled in. Than when they are settled they leave. "If you have a intern for a longer period of time it allows you to show the student more of the company, and the student can learn more of the practice, "said Agnes Scheringa of Present Press.
Angela den Besten and Emiel Dingemans are students in Commercial Economy that experienced the difficulty of finding an internship. Angela: "since September I'm searching. At the ten companies I applied, I always wasvfor the same reason, rejected. The period that I want to have an internship for is too short. " Emiel recognizes this: "Of the fifteen applications I had four conversations. I was constant turned down because of the short period of time. "
Why do schools offer an internship of such a short period if students have difficulty finding an internship? Rob den Boeck, Internship Communication management at Hogeschool Utrecht: "those ten weeks are just as long as a block. We notice that students prefer a longer internshipperiod. They experienced this is nonsense and think too few internships can be found for a ten week period. Therefore, next year we will offer an internship of twenty weeks. "
