About us Faculty of Arts Job Festival Step 2: Meet the Employer

Province of Groningen

The Province of Groningen has been committed to a pleasant working and living environment for all Groningers for over 400 years! We do this together with residents, other public authorities, companies and social organisations.

In Groningen, we lead the way in switching from fossil fuels to sustainable energy. Did you know that the provincial government building has been gas-free since 2020 and a large proportion of our service vehicles drive electrically or on alternative diesel?

We build and maintain roads. We are also testing self-driving transport by land, water, rail and air. In our province, we provide space for nature and are careful with cultural heritage. For business and entrepreneurs, there are subsidies to help them innovate and become more sustainable. And, of course, we build Groningen's perspective after the consequences of gas extraction.

Speed-dates with Trainees

Speed-dates with Trainees Province of Groningen

What is it like to work at the province as a trainee and after?

Every two to three years, a new trainee programme starts at the Province of Groningen. The programme lasts two years. As a trainee, you work at three different places. After eight months, you change places. Naturally, you will carry out assignments for the province, but also for another government organisation. This could be a municipality, water board or environmental service, for example.

As a starter or recent graduate, a traineeship at the province is an ideal stepping stone for your career. You receive intensive coaching and follow a varied programme together with the other trainees.

Lennart and Judith are two former trainees. In these videos, they talk about their experiences as trainees and how they later progressed through the organisation.

In March 2024, 14 enthusiastic trainees started the two-year trainee programme ‘Future of Groningen!’. We will presumably start a new programme after the summer of 2025.

Carousel of Trainees:

  • Carmen Albert Villalta: working within team Information Management as (trainee) Innovation and AI Advisor.
  • Loïs Westra: working within team Procurement as (trainee) Procurement Advisor.
  • Mirte de Vries: working within team Public, Smart and Green Mobility. She is working on the improvement of Existing Rail as part of the Delta Plan for the North, and the themes of affordability and accessibility of public transport.
  • Sanne Snippe: working within Data Team Policy as a (trainee) employee at the Province of Groningen.
