Will you write the best essay in Dutch on the theme ‘AI and culture’? Then you are the winner of the Gerrit Krol Award 2025! The Language Centre and the Dutch Language and Culture programme of the University of Groningen are organising this fourth edition of the Gerrit Krol Award. Students from all universities and universities of applied sciences in the Dutch language area can participate.

Register now for one or more of 13 workshops in our annual advanced-level professional development and interdisciplinary learning programme this 6-12 July at the 2025 European Developing Across Differences (DAD) Learning Lab & Community Week. The DAD is organized by the University of Groningen in partnership with the Institute for Developing Across Differences (IDD).

At the Writing Centre, University of Groningen students can receive free writing coaching. Our coaches will ask you questions and help you to look at your text or writing process from a different angle. The goal is for you to rediscover the joy of writing and to have a starting point for writing better academic texts.

The free Dutch Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) by the University of Groningen Language Centre has reached an impressive milestone: 300,000 participants worldwide have learned the basics of the Dutch language through this course. What once started as an initiative to familiarize future University of Groningen (UG) students and staff with Dutch has grown into an international success.

The University of Groningen (UG) Language Centre is proud to announce the launch of the third cohort of its training programme in teaching Dutch as a second language (NT2). After receiving a high number of applications for the first training round, it was immediately decided to offer the training programme not annually, but semi-annually. By training competent NT2 teachers, we hope to contribute to meeting the growing demand for teachers.

In August and September, we are again offering a diverse range of language courses. Early birds can now benefit from a €50 discount! Do not hesitate any longer and register for one of the language courses listed below.

At the Language Centre, you can take plenty of courses this summer! Many short courses are planned in which you will be fully immersed in the language and culture.

The University Translation and Correction Service (UVC) offered by the Language Centre works on various translation services. We talked with Elena Lobanov, coordinator of the department, about the importance of human translation compared to artificial intelligence. 

This coming weekend is King’s Day, and we enjoy celebrating it! Café de las Lenguas is organizing a themed evening about King’s Day and the Dutch language on Thursday. The programme will include traditional Dutch games and a presentation on the history of King’s Day. It promises to be an evening full of fun, with room to expand your cultural knowledge and language skills!
