SOM, the graduate school and research institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business offers a PhD position in the field of “Economics of Hydrogen Markets”.
Job description
This PhD position is meant to contribute to the economic analysis of markets for hydrogen. Hydrogen is increasingly seen as a potential energy carrier to heat buildings and produce electricity while it is also expected to become a major fuel in transport. In addition, hydrogen may play a role to help the electricity sector to deal with the increasing shares of renewable energy by offering flexibility regarding the timing and location of production. The potential of hydrogen as a key energy carrier has been analysed extensively from a technical-engineering perspective, but less attention has been paid to the design of markets for hydrogen.
The PhD candidate will focus mainly on a) the economic conditions for various forms of production, transportation and storage of various types of hydrogen, b) the willingness-to-pay of various groups of users (households, industry) for the green character of hydrogen, c) market failures in hydrogen markets and how these can be addressed by regulatory measures and d) an economic model of the integrated energy markets (hydrogen, electricity and natural gas) which can be used to perform scenario analysis, to analyse interactions between these markets and to assets effects of policy measures on market outcomes.
The PhD candidate will closely collaborate with the supervisors and other colleagues within the Centre for Energy Economics Research of the Faculty of Economics and Business and the research programme Economics, Econometrics and Finance, while the research will be guided by a sounding board with representatives from the Dutch gas industry which funds this research.
