Seminar on Impact of renewable energy subsidy policies on Emission Trading in the EU

Datum:10 november 2017

'Impact of renewable energy subsidy policies on the Emission Trading in the EU' seminar for students

This seminar will introduce students to the potentially distorting effect of renewable energy subsidies on the EU emission permit prices (EUA). Thanks to the renewable energy subsidies and the increased deployment of renewable energy generation sources, the price of the EU emission permits has been negatively affected. You can find more about the topic in a recently published blog and article (only in Dutch) by Machiel Mulder and Steven Mous.

As one the most contested topics of concurrent energy policy debates within the EU energy and carbon-intensive industries, and as an 'EU Flagship Climate Policy' proposed by the European Commission, the efficient functioning of the EU ETS could have a profound impact on the overall CO2 emission reduction within the European Union area in the future. For that, however, additional energy policies such as renewable energy subsidies should be carefully evaluated and harmonized together with EU ETS, in order to avoid the occurence, of what article describes as so-called 'Waterbed effect'.

The speakers of this seminar are Edwin Woerdman (Co-director Groningen Centre of Energy Law) and Markus Schmid of WISE (NGO)
