Teachers: learn more about new teaching modules

23 February 2016

Science LinX is involved in a European project entitled Irresistible , in which 10 countries have developed teaching modules on topical natural science subjects. The Netherlands has devised a module on Carbohydrates in Breast Milk. Two workshops have been organized to show teachers how a number of these modules work.

The teaching modules are based on the 6E method of Inquiry-Based Science Education, in which pupils learn by getting to grips with ongoing academic research. They then present their own academic findings in an exhibition, showing how the results are relevant to society. The modules also focus on the ethical aspects of research and innovation, in line with the European Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) theme. You can see more about this in the film 'De geheimen van moedermelk' (The secrets of breast milk).

As part of the project, Jan Apotheker (chemistry teaching expert and project leader of Irresistible) and Eva Teuling (who co-developed the Dutch module) are giving two workshops on RRI and the inquiry-based science education method. The workshops are open to teachers taking part in the project and other interested parties.

There will also be time to look through the teaching material that has been developed, and ask the designers and users of this material about their experiences.

The workshop will be given twice:

1) Wednesday 9 March from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Carolus Clusius College in Zwolle.

2) Friday 11 March, at the University of Groningen (during the regular Studiestijgers hours), from 2 - 4.30 p.m.

You can register by sending an e-mail to Eva Teuling (e.teuling rug.nl), stating which workshop you would like to attend. You can also use this this e-mail address to ask any questions.

For more information about Irresistible: visit our website, view the registrations for activities and watch an introduction lesson for the carbohydrate module on our YouTube channel, or join the Facebook group to exchange experiences with other teachers.
