Tomorrow is the launch of the Horizon Europe ‘Teaming for Excellence’ project PHAETHON. The research group IREES of Prof. Klaus Hubacek of the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen ( ESRIG ) participates in this project that secured funding of EUR 15 million from the EU earlier this year. The UG team is funded with EUR 1.5 million.

The PHAETHON project aims to have a direct impact on the energy research and innovation (R&I) cycle in Cyprus, the surrounding region and globally, thus addressing the European Green Deal energy sector decarbonisation challenges

Partners

The project is coordinated by the University of Cyprus. In addition to ESRIG, the UG Wubbo Ockels School for Energy and Climate is also part of the Groningen team. Other partners in the project are the Technical University of Denmark, Cyprus FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy, and the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Cyprus Seeds.

Centre of Excellence

Part of the project is to upgrade the FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy of the University of Cyprus to an autonomous and self-sustaining Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Intelligent, Efficient and Sustainable Energy Solutions. The research priorities of PHAETHON will integrate technological as well as social, environmental and economic aspects.

Horizon Europe Teaming projects

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation. It tackles climate change, helps to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and boosts the EU’s competitiveness and growth. Teaming projects will create new or modernise existing centres of excellence in Widening countries (countries with low participation rates in previous projects) through strategic partnerships with leading institutions abroad.
