I chose to study Public International Law at the University of Groningen following my undergraduate studies in Law and Political Science in Germany, where I first encountered this fascinating field. The subject of international law captivated me, and upon consulting with my professors at the University of Göttingen, I was advised to pursue further studies in the Netherlands, with a particular recommendation for Groningen. The programme here in Groningen stood out to me due to its comprehensive coverage of various subfields within international law and its emphasis on current global issues. Additionally, the faculty comprises highly qualified lecturers from both academia and practice, offering a well-rounded and in-depth educational experience. This combination of breadth, depth, and practical insight made the program an ideal choice for advancing my knowledge and career in public international law.

What I enjoyed most about studying at the Faculty of Law here in Groningen is the welcoming and supportive academic environment. The new Röling building, with its state-of-the-art lecture rooms, is a nice perk - plus, it gives us students a great excuse to enjoy brand-new facilities! What truly sets this faculty apart from my experience in Germany, however, is the personal connection we have with our professors and lecturers. They are incredibly approachable, encouraging us to use their first names and always being open to discussions and questions. I am particularly grateful for their support beyond the regular coursework; they assisted me in preparing for my first Ph.D. interview and helped me draft my first publication. This close and friendly relationship with the faculty has been invaluable to me, enhancing both my academic and professional development.

As for the city, Groningen is a vibrant, student-friendly city that offers a unique blend of charm and convenience. With its dense population and compact layout, everything is easily accessible by foot or bike, making it an ideal place for students. It reminds me a lot of Göttingen, where I first studied, but instead of a city wall, the city is surrounded by picturesque canals that add to its scenic beauty, and boasts a lively atmosphere with a strong sense of community, largely driven by its large student population. There are numerous cafes, bars, and cultural events that cater to young people, ensuring there's always something to do. The bustling markets and historical sites, like the Martini Tower, add to the city's appeal. However, I must emphasize the importance of securing housing early! I began my search two months in advance, and it was still quite a challenge to find a suitable place. So, if you're considering studying here, make housing a top priority well ahead of time.

After I complete my degree in August 2024, I have several exciting paths ahead of me. I have applied for multiple traineeships at prestigious international organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Council of Europe, as well as Ph.D. positions to further deepen my understanding of international law. Additionally, I plan to participate in two international law summer schools to further enrich my knowledge and expose me to diverse legal perspectives and practices. My ultimate dream is to serve as counsel to a party or as a law clerk to a judge at the International Court of Justice. The experiences and connections I have gained here have given me the confidence and expertise to pursue this goal. The rigorous training, coupled with opportunities to engage in real-world legal challenges—such as participating as part of the Groningen delegation in the Frist-Kalshoven Humanitarian Law Competition in The Hague has prepared me to contribute effectively to the field of international law and to make a meaningful impact in my future endeavors.
