Uniterms (Terminology Database)
It’s never easy to find the right translation for a university-related or educational term. The University of Groningen (UG) Terminology Database is designed to help you find the correct translation quickly.
What’s in the database?
The database contains Dutch and English terms that are used within the University of Groningen as well as other education terms. All terms in the database are substantiated by a reliable source, so that you immediately see whether a term has been authorized by the Board of the University of Groningen or by for example Nuffic or NVAO
Why this database?
The database does not aim to be an exhaustive dictionary but rather a useful list for everyone who regularly needs to translate university or educational terminology. The aim is that the database will continue to develop and contribute to the consistent translation of educational terminology across Europe. We plan to add more languages as soon as possible.
Who’s behind it?
The database has been built up over several years by the Language Centre University Translation and Correction Service (UVC). Thanks to financial support from the Language & Culture Policy project we have been able to develop new software and update and supplement the database. The database has also been supplemented by several other lists of educational terminology . It owes much to the HOTNeV project, which has been working on coordinating higher education terminology within the Netherlands and Flanders. The UVC would like to thank all contributors*.
We would like to dedicate Uniterms to our colleague Dr Julia Harvey, coordinator of the UVC within the Language Centre. Julia was the founder of this terminology database and a great advocate of consistency in higher education terminology. Julia passed away on 8 August 2019.
