AI in Healthcare: Beyond the Algorithms

Are you fond of difficult legal, ethical and philosophical discussions regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare? Do you want to learn from experts what challenges the modern day rapid advancements of AI in healthcare pose? Join us on the 4th of February for this thought-provoking symposium “AI in Healthcare: Beyond the Algorithms” to explore together various legal, ethical and philosophical aspects of the implementation of AI in the medical system. This event is a collaboration between the Digital Healthcare Community and the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIM) student association.

This three hour symposium will start with a talk by Dr. Markus Eronen, assistant professor at the Faculty of Philosophy (RUG), will guide us through recent discussions in the philosophy of AI, covering themes such as the difference between human and artificial intelligence, explainability of AI, and trust and responsibility when using AI in healthcare.

Next, Dr. Els Maeckelberghe, associate professor in Bioethics and Research Ethics, will introduce the topic of ethical AI and we will delve together into intricate subjects such as bias in AI systems, respecting patient confidentiality, fostering informed decision-making and rethinking the patient-doctor relation. 

Lastly, Dr. Nynke Vellinga, senior researcher at the Faculty of Law (RUG), about the legal challenges of AI implementation in healthcare. Who is responsible when the AI system makes a mistake? What are the current European regulations regarding this topic? How do we implement responsible AI in healthcare? 

The afternoon will end with an hour of networking drinks where you will have a chance to discuss more in depth with the speakers and meet fellow students, experts, researchers and healthcare professionals. We hope to see you there!
