Textbooks to Textbots: ChatGPT’s Role in Reshaping Education
When: | Tu 23-01-2024 09:00 - 12:30 |
Where: | House of Connections, Grote Markt 21, 9712 HR Groningen |
Many faculties are considering the development and successful implementation of an educational vision and policy for the use of ChatGPT and similar generative AI technologies. At the same time, the capabilities of generative AI systems and foundational models - which can generate text, images, video and more - continue to grow. This raises fundamental questions about the design of courses and assessments, but also, more broadly, about desirable learning outcomes and the vision of education in general.
Organised by Tommaso Caselli, Oskar Gstrein and Joëlle Swart |
This event aims to bring together members of the Exam Board, academic experts, policy makers, interested staff from all faculties and student representatives at the University of Groningen. We will explore the latest trends and developments around the use of generative AI in education, take a closer look at current sentiments at UG, informed by an ongoing survey, and consider emerging regulatory requirements (e.g. EU AI Act).
In addition, participants will have the space to interactively discuss and compare existing policies, share available resources to better manage the technology, and discuss the potential need to adjust our educational vision in light of the disruptive potential of these technologies.
Context
The event will start with the three theme coordinators sharing their perspective on the technology. This will allow us to consider the background and technical possibilities of foundation models and generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, to present first insights into the changing perception and vision of assessment and teaching, and to take a look at ethical and regulatory implications.
After these introductory remarks, participants will meet in groups to share the status quo in their faculties and identify best practices, which will then be shared in a concluding plenary session. The outcome of the meeting will be a practical and short report that can be shared across the university and with other interested educational institutions.
