Upgrade Zernikelaan

Towards a new green central axis for the Zernike Campus 2019-2021

The redesign of the Zernikelaan area increases traffic safety and enhances the atmosphere for the thousands of students and staff who together form a daily education and business community of huge economic significance.

About the project

Within the framework of the ‘Groningen Agreement’ (Akkoord van Groningen), the Municipality of Groningen, the University of Groningen and the Hanze UAS Groningen are making their wide- ranging ambitions for the innovative campus more concrete. Contractor is Oosterhof Holman.

» Zernike park promenade and bus station

The Zernike promenade is a wide park along the pond, the bus lanes and the road, where existing and (more than 200) new trees were combined with a bike and footpath to form a continuous, attractive and safe connection of almost 1600 meters through the campus.
Also the junction for the buses was renovated and equipped for electric driving. A grandstand is being built at the Willem-Alexander Sports Center and a panna court will be built in front of the stands.

» Duisenberg pond, the new green central point of the campus

The quay area was transformed into a pleasant leasure area through a green, accessible quay area with a better connection to the pond instead of the steep, stone quay. Water lilies and marsh cypress trees were planted, trees that colour with the seasons. The long boardwalk along the length of the pond and, on the north side, a wide staircase to the water make it a nice place to sit at the water's edge.

» Better connection to ring road

Throughout the summer of 2019, the roads, bike lanes and exits from the ring road near the main entrance to the campus were renovated. Traffic lights were installed to regulate the traffic using the exits.

» New bicycle route on historical Penningsdijk

Since the academic year 2018-19 there is a new bicycle route to get directly into the heart of the Zernike Campus. This route runs – via a new bridge - underneath the Linnaeusborg to the Paddepoelsterweg, the extension of the smart Zernike bicycle route through Selwerd. Interestingly, this new bicycle path will follow the exact course of the historical Penningsdijk. This new temporary access route is being created to keep the Zernike Campus accessible for cyclists during major building projects such as the Feringa Building.
