The UG develops an energy policy for carbon-neutral business operations in 2035–2050

The University of Groningen (UG) has a huge sustainability goal: to be CO2-neutral by 2035, with all energy coming from completely renewable sources and at least 85% being generated by the University itself. Although the legal deadline is 2050, the UG aims to reach this goal as early as 2035, just like the Municipality of Groningen. To get there, the University recently drafted a Vision on Energy and an Energy and Sustainability Policy Memorandum.

Carbon-neutral business operations

The UG aims to achieve carbon-neutral business operations by 2035, with 48% less energy consumption compared to 2019, and with all energy coming from renewable sources, at least 85% of which is self-generated. In line with the legal obligation, this must be fully achieved by 2050 at the latest. The UG has therefore drafted the Vision on Energy and the Energy and Sustainability Policy Memorandum. This policy document serves as a comprehensive starting point, adopted by the Board of the University and the consultative participation body. 

By setting these goals, the UG is making major strides toward maximizing sustainability. At the same time, we will save a tremendous amount of money by using less energy. In light of the current political situation—reduction in revenue as a result of the Balanced Internationalization Act (Wet Internationalisering in Balans, WIB) and the Framework Coalition Agreement—these savings are very much welcome.

Regarding this, Hans Biemans says the following: ‘The UG places great value on a clean and sustainable future for the next generation, supported by an ambitious vision on sustainability that carries with it various financial challenges and disruption. We will make well-considered choices in that respect. Maximizing space efficiency and using less energy are important steps we can start taking right away. Through smart, innovative solutions and targeted investments, we are building a green future together.’

Investment and measures

The next phase is setting up a process. It is essential to act swiftly to ensure that energy targets and legal obligations are met in a timely manner. With targeted investments and measures, the UG aims to reduce its total energy consumption, energy dependence, and energy costs. Measures will be tailored for each building and campus area, mapping out in as much detail as possible the opportunities, costs, and benefits. 

A multidisciplinary programme team within the UG is working on comprehensive plans for this energy transition. They are focusing on four themes: energy savings, energy generation, increasing the sustainability of the current real estate portfolio, and new-build and renovation aligned with future sustainability requirements.
