  • the Pre-Master's Economic Development and Globalization will be renamed to Pre-Master's International Economics and Sustainable Development

From BSc to MSc: how the Pre-Master's Finance helped me advance my career (Bas Berens)

After studying at the Hanze UAS, I worked as a junior researcher there. Recognizing the importance of a master’s degree to advance in research, I started exploring options to attain this. In this process, I found the MSc Finance at FEB to be a combination of some of the most interesting subjects of my BSc. This MSc, however, required a Pre-Master's.

With some overlap with my BSc program, the Pre-Master's provided a manageable workload, combinable with working part-time at the Hanze UAS. It also gave me the chance to join a diverse and mostly international community, making new friends and enjoying new perspectives in the process. In addition to this, a great team of approachable lecturers always seemed willing to offer guidance, creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in the faculty.

Aside from the community, I most enjoyed the courses Econometrics and Research Methods, which, combined with writing a research paper, gave me experience in quantitative research methods, while deepening my understanding of qualitative methods. What I learned in these courses and the Pre-Master's as a whole perfectly complemented what I had learned during my BSc program and my work.

Though I admit I was initially somewhat sceptical about the necessity of a pre-Master's, it proved to be a valuable stepping stone. It allowed me to review and expand upon existing knowledge while leaving space for part-time work.
