Do you know any of the LGBTQIA+ hotspots in Groningen and Leeuwarden? In light of Purple Friday, we talk about some lovely spots you can visit whether you’re part of the LGBTQIA+ community yourself or an ally!
Groningen - Dorothy’s Drag under the rainbow
If you’re in for a fabulous show, then Dorothy’s DragQueen Bar is for you! The bar is said to be the oldest “gay” bar in the Netherlands and has had many different names over the years. This is what they say about it themselves: “We are a community Dragbar and brown café/bar. We have drag shows, drag karaoke, student nights, drag bingo, and competitions. Run by a gay couple for the LGBTQIA+ and friends’ community”. Definitely the perfect place to have a fun night!
Groningen - Café De Prins
Opened since 2017, gay café De Prins is another LGBTQIA+ hotspot here in Groningen! The café has a wide range of drinks (including wines, beers, and delicious cocktails) and organises many events throughout the year. They offer pub quizzes, music ranging from the 80s to now, and organise a drag show every second Friday of the month. On Sundays, you can even enjoy Dutch music all night long! Good to know as well: they are proud sponsors of PRIDE Groningen and actively participate in the board of PRIDE Groningen.
Leeuwarden - Gay Bar Bubbels
Bubbels is the one and only gay bar in Leeuwarden! Enjoy a lovely night out with open minded and like minded people in the heart of the city centre. Tip: on Thursdays there’s a discount on drinks. You don’t want to miss it! ;)
Groningen - Café Uit de Kast
Café Uit de Kast (in English: Out of the Closet) is an open minded brown café where you can drink and eat some snacks with friends. They mainly play hits from the 70s and 80s (but you can request any songs), so if that’s your cup of tea definitely check out the café!
Here you go, 4 lovely LGBTQIA+ hotspots for you to visit. Do you know any other hotspots in Groningen or Leeuwarden? Let us know in the comments! Have fun :).

Hiya! :) I’m Hylke, a Dutch MA English Literature student. People often ask me if I’m Frisian, but sadly I’m not; I just have a Frisian name. I love reading, writing, meeting with friends, and the colour yellow, so much so that I take pictures of every yellow wall I can find!
