As an independent trainer, lecturer, and career coach, Petra Muns has always been fascinated by the power of storytelling. Through her company, Werkpodium, she helps individuals and organizations shape their narratives, using storytelling as a key methodology. When a colleague introduced her to the university’s Winter School "Narrative and the Mind", she saw it as the perfect opportunity to deepen her academic understanding of storytelling and explore new ways to apply it in her work.

"My motivation was to gain more scientific knowledge about storytelling and to find inspiration for new approaches," Petra explains. "I’m very familiar with Joseph Campbell’s classic *Hero’s Journey*, but I was eager to broaden my perspective."

With a background in applied sciences (HBO) as a creative therapist, social worker, and career coach, Petra was no stranger to working with personal and professional narratives. However, the Winter School offered her something unique: an international and academic deep dive into the subject.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the programme was engaging in discussions with participants from all over the world. "I loved hearing how people approach storytelling from different academic perspectives," she says. "The conversations were incredibly enriching, and reflecting on the nuances and experiences of so many professionals was fascinating."

While Petra does not aspire to an academic career, the insights gained during the programme have had a direct impact on her professional practice. "The Winter School provided me with a broader view and fresh inspiration that I can immediately apply in my work," she shares. Several workshops introduced her to new methodologies, some of which she has already integrated into her daily practice. "It also gave me the sense of being part of a vast network of colleagues whose knowledge I can tap into and rely on."

Would she recommend the Winter School to others? Absolutely. According to Petra, the programme is ideal for individuals passionate about academia and narrative studies. "It’s perfect for those who enjoy abstract thinking and appreciate the wisdom of researchers from different fields. I followed a more practical track, which is particularly valuable for those looking to apply academic knowledge in real-world contexts."

When asked about her most memorable experience, Petra highlights a workshop by Anneke Sools. "We explored our future narratives through dance, which was an incredible way to embody storytelling," she recalls. Another standout moment was presenting her work on diversity and storytelling. "It was inspiring to exchange ideas, engage in discussions, and experience how stories can truly come to life."

For Petra, the Winter School was more than just an academic experience—it was a journey of discovery, connection, and professional growth.

Summer and Winter Schools are short-term academic programs that allow students to explore specific subjects, gain new skills, and connect with peers from different backgrounds. These programs can enhance your academic profile and provide valuable international experiences.

If you're considering applying, here are a few key tips:

  1. Find the Right Program – Look for a summer school that matches your interests and academic goals. The University of Groningen offers diverse research-driven programs for students at different levels.
  1. Check Requirements & Deadlines – Each program has its own eligibility criteria and application deadlines. Make sure you review them early to prepare the necessary documents, such as a motivation letter and academic transcripts.

  2. Plan for Costs & Logistics – Consider tuition fees, accommodation options, and possible funding opportunities like scholarships. Also, check if you need a visa or health insurance for your stay.

With good preparation, a summer school can be an enriching academic and cultural experience!
