Dutch Travels!

Welcome to Groningen! As you embark on your student journey here, getting around efficiently will help you make the most of your time. Here’s everything you need to know about transportation in and around this vibrant Dutch city.

1. Airports

Groningen is accessible through several airports:

Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam): The main international hub of the Netherlands, about two hours by train from Groningen. If you’re travelling to/from a non-EU country, you’re more than likely to do so from this airport.

Other Regional Airports: Eindhoven and Rotterdam are also options. Eindhoven is particularly popular with budget airlines. So if you’d like to travel within the EU on a budget, it’s best to check for plane tickets to/from Eindhoven, and a plus point- Eindhoven is usually less crowded than Schiphol!

The German airport in Bremen is also a mere 2.5 drive to Groningen. You can catch a bus from the airport to Groningen for as little as €11.

2. Public Transport

The Netherlands has a world-class public transportation system, making travel easy and convenient.

Trains

Dutch Railways (NS) operates an extensive network of trains connecting cities and towns. Groningen’s central station offers frequent services to various destinations. The trains and stations are clean and safe, with Groningen’s station standing out in particular in its architectural beauty.

Buses

Local buses, operated by Qbuzz, cover Groningen city and surrounding areas. Buses are an excellent option for short distances and areas not serviced by trains.

Pro tip: Buses only stop at a bus stop if you give them a hand signal; similarly, if you want to get off at a stop, you need to press the ‘Stop’ button on the bus to indicate to the driver that you want to step off!

OV-chipkaart

An OV-chipkaart is a must-have for using public transport. This rechargeable smart card is valid on trains, buses, trams, and metros across the country. You can purchase one at stations or online and load it with credit.

Keep in mind that there are two types of OV-Chipkaarts: Anonymous and personal. The anonymous card can be shared and does not have personal information. It's useful for short-term visitors or if you’re not keen on registering your details, and it can be bought at the NS-ticket machine. The personal card has your name and photo and offers benefits like automatic reloading, monthly billing, and travel discounts. It’s ideal for frequent travellers. The personal OV-chipkaart can only be purchased online via ov-chipkaart.nl; they cannot be bought from NS directly.

Student Mobility Card

Exclusive for international students, this card offers discounts and deals on public transport. It’s a cost-effective way to explore the Netherlands.

3. Cycling

Cycling is ingrained in Dutch culture, and Groningen is emblematic of this culture. Known as the “World Cycling City,” Groningen has an intricate network of bike lanes, making cycling safe and enjoyable. It’s no surprise then that cycling is the most popular mode of transport in the city!

Buying or Renting a Bike

You can buy a new or second-hand bike from shops or online marketplaces. Renting is also an option, with various rental shops in the city offering competitive rates.

Tips for Cyclists:

Invest in a sturdy lock to prevent theft.

Learn the local cycling rules and etiquette.

Use bike lights at night to stay visible (and avoid fines ;)).

4. Driving

While driving isn’t the most popular choice in Groningen due to excellent public transport and cycling infrastructure, it’s still an option.

International Driving Permit (For non-EU people)

You can use your international driving license for up to six months. After that, you may need to convert it to a Dutch license.

Parking

Parking in the city centre can be challenging and expensive. Look for park-and-ride options on the outskirts for a more convenient solution, IF you want to take that route.

The super-efficient transport system of the Netherlands and Groningen ensures that you can explore the city and beyond with ease. We hope that you embrace (and respect) the local culture, enjoy your travels, and make the most of your time in this beautiful city.

Safe travels!
