Do you sometimes have questions in class or a lecture? Are you sometimes too embarrassed to ask said questions? Then look no further! Many students hesitate, but asking questions is the foundation of research. Here are six simple tips and tricks to help you engage more in class!
Step 1: Stop avoiding eye contact
We’ve all been there before. The professor asks the class a question but no one wants to answer. This is when you start seeing everyone looking around, avoiding eye contact, hoping they will not be picked. It might be a smart choice, but it is the WRONG move. Don't be scared to speak up, look them head-on. They might still not pick you, but then you at least don't look like you have a kink in your neck.

Step 2: Make sure you took notes on the readings
A key to not feeling blindsided in class is coming in prepared. Ensure you do all the readings and assignments ahead of time. Even if you struggled with them, be sure to take notes and bring a set of questions to class. That way when discussions start, you have something to contribute!

Step 3: When the professor asks the class a question. DON’T PANIC
Asking questions is about gaining more knowledge, as well as giving the professors and lecturers an understanding of where they may need to focus. It is also a good habit, to develop for your future in the workforce!
Don't forget, there is no such thing as a stupid question! Ignore the people who say curiosity killed the cat, and remember. Curiosity brought innovation

Step 4: Take deep breaths
Lowering your heart rate is key. If you can feel your blood pumping into your ears, then take 5 deep breaths. Calm your nerves and focus on what you want to say.
In through your nose out through your mouth. It does wonders, trust me.

Step 5: It’s okay not to be okay
Nobody is perfect, and nobody expects perfection. And remember, we learn from mistakes and failures. So don’t be too stressed

In the words of Hannah Montana, “Everybody makes mistakes, Everybody has those days”, so don't stress out too much. You’ve got this!
