As a student in the international track of the Bachelor's degree programme in History, you search for explanations of events that took place in the past and are still relevant today.
You learn about the connections between various developments, and you're encouraged to dig deeper and ask critical questions.
The programme takes three years. In the first year, you are given an overview of history from Antiquity to the present day, and you study Dutch history. In the second year, you examine history on the basis of various themes, such as economic and social history, political culture and cultural history. The third year, which includes a course unit on the theory of history, is used to deepen your knowledge. Your Bachelor's programme is rounded off with a thesis. As a history student, you are free to compile part of the programme yourself.
You can study for a Bachelor's degree in History on a full-time or a part-time basis, but there is no specific part-time programme. All classes in the international track of the part-time History programme are taught in English. The duration of your study programme depends on your availability and the amount of time you are able to invest in your study.
In het eerste jaar behandel je aan de hand van chronologische vakken de belangrijkste gebeurtenissen en ontwikkelingen van de oudheid tot nu. Tevens werk je aan academische onderzoeks- en schrijfvaardigheden. Daarnaast kom je in aanraking met historische bronnen en theorieën van de geschiedbeoefening. Kortom, het eerste jaar is zeer veelzijdig en legt een stevige basis voor de rest van je studie.
In het tweede jaar leer je de geschiedenis te benaderen vanuit thematische invalshoeken. Je leert drie 'soorten' geschiedenis kennen, waarbij elk zijn eigen accenten legt en eigen theorieën gebruikt: de cultuurgeschiedenis, de politieke geschiedenis en de economische en sociale geschiedenis. Ook volg je een kernvak, een werkcollege waarin je door het bestuderen van literatuur en bronnen inhoudelijke kennis en onderzoek vaardigheden opdoet.
In het derde jaar begin je met een minor naar keuze (buitenlandverblijf, beroepsgericht of verbredend). In het laatste half jaar kun je je verdiepen in een grote internationale regio. Daarnaast leer je hoe je geschiedenis kunt vertalen naar een breed publiek en hoe je van geschiedenis je beroep kunt maken. Je sluit je bachelorfase af met het schrijven van een scriptie.
Generally, as a student, you will spend about 20-24 hours a week on the programme, including lectures. With this amount of hours, you will complete the programme between 4 and 6 years. The days you have contact hours as a part-time student depend on your availability. There is no special programme for part-time students, but there are many different seminar groups, all given at different times. Lectures are given at the same time for all students.

Na je studie Geschiedenis kun je kritisch en probleemgericht denken. Je bent in staat grote hoeveelheden informatie te verwerken en kunt de uitkomsten goed presenteren. Historici vinden vaak werk in de journalistiek, bij musea, culturele instellingen of uitgeverijen. Ook gaan ze regelmatig aan de slag in de politiek, bij de overheid of in het bedrijfsleven.
