Stranger Things Have Happened Show

Stranger Things Have Happened is an international improv comedy group from Groningen. They perform improv comedy which involves scenes that are made up on the spot by the actors, usually inspired by suggestions taken from the audience. The result is a unique and fresh show that remains unpredictable for both the audience and the performers.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the programme of the FEB Education Day 2024 ‘Resilient Education’. The FEB Education Day takes place on Tuesday 26 March, from 13:00 to 17:00h. During the afternoon you can visit several inspiring rounds of presentations and discussions highlighting educational innovations. We start the event with a plenary session about ‘resilient education’ and end the day with drinks and snacks. The event is part of the UG Education Festival organized by the TAG.

Evaluating teaching: consultation on your teaching practice

Description: The CoP Research into Higher Education is offering a tailored, individualized consultation to explore your ideas on how to do research on an innovation or improvement of your own teaching practice. For example, we can discuss ways to evaluate the effect of your innovation on students’ learning or help you select suitable research designs and research methods.

In een mum van tijd feedback op schrijfvaardigheid

Veel studenten hebben moeite met hun Nederlandse schrijfvaardigheid. Als vakdocent is het niet altijd makkelijk om hen hierbij te begeleiden. In deze introductieworkshop leggen wij daarom in slechts één uur tijd uit hoe je dat op efficiënte wijze kunt doen. Ons belangrijkste uitgangspunt is dat die begeleiding jou als docent geen extra tijd kost. We leggen uit waarom het averechts werkt als je de teksten zelf verbetert en we demonstreren wat wél werkt. De uitgebreide variant van deze workshop is sinds 2022 al negen keer op aanvraag verzorgd binnen verschillende opleidingen en leidde in bijna alle gevallen tot aanpassingen van het onderwijsprogramma.

Embodied learning: tools, advantages, and pitfalls

Presenter: Andrea Sangiacomo

Description: In traditional classroom settings, most attention is focused on verbal communication. But we don't learn by simply listening and absorbing information: physical activation, metacognitive reflection and group interaction are also important dimensions that influence the learning process. Embodied learning can provide a set of tools to integrate these other dimensions into the classroom, to address specific issues such as self-consciousness or group anxiety, to develop soft skills related to metacognition, or to provide interactive and real-life examples of otherwise abstract concepts or ideas. In this workshop, we will experiment directly with some basic ways to implement embodied learning and some of the issues to consider when doing so.

Crafting transformative change through empathy: A practical workshop

Presenters: Eloise Daumerie & Angelos Konstantinidis

Description: During this hands-on workshop, you will personally experience the positive impact of empathy on the quality of your interactions with fellow participants. Additionally, you will receive a brief introduction to the definition and components of empathy, along with an exploration of why empathy holds such significance in higher education in the 21st century. Following this, you will enhance your empathy skills through reflections, activities, and role play, utilizing models and insights from non-violent communication.

CBL in the Enlight Global Engagement Module: Inclusion and Equality in Education

Explore the innovative integration of Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) within the Enlight Global Engagement Module, designed to foster global competence among future citizens. In this workshop, participants will engage with the topic of global competence and transformative education, and practically experience the opportunities and challenges that CBL offers as a didactic method. Be inspired to translate the tips and tricks of this module to your own educational environments in the future!

First-generation students: what if you don't have a wheelbarrow?

Presenter: Marco Boonstra

Description: All over the world, first-generation students, students without parents with higher education, have difficulties progressing in university. They have, for example, a higher risk for drop-out, study delay or have more negative study experiences. In this workshop, we use the experiences of medical students as a starting point to discuss the potential barriers and strengths of the first-generation students at your faculty. The number of medical students with highly educated parents is very high and estimated at around 80%. These students have a 'kruiwagen' (wheelbarrow) to help them pass the tests to become a student in medicine, but also during their studies. These students can, for example, ask for help when they need an internship or want to perform research. At the same time, first-generation students experience barriers during their studies. They, for example, report to have problems building a (professional) network and identifying or cooperating with supervisors and teachers. This is unfortunate because they possess strengths that can make them fantastic doctors. In this workshop, you will hear about their experiences, and we will discuss to what extent students at your faculty might relate to these experiences. We also reflect upon how you can make a difference for these students!

Inclusivity problems faced by students and fellow lectures

Engage in a collaborative brainstorming and discussion session centered around the challenges of inclusivity faced by both students and fellow lecturers. This interactive dialogue provides a platform to share experiences, insights, and potential solutions aimed at creating an inclusive learning environment. Together, we will explore strategies to address barriers, foster a sense of belonging, and promote equal opportunities within the educational sphere.

Technology & perceptions of AI in Education

Embark on a unique journey as we host a lecturer's carousel, where educators share their diverse experiences with Artificial Intelligence in Education. Three lecturers discuss and show what they are doing now in their courses with AI:

• Kristian Peters: Adapting course assignments for the GPT era: Strategies and implications for the upcoming academic year.

• Kai Yu Ma: Zorgscenar.io is an adaptive education application where students can practice different competencies by chatting with a programmed AI.
• Jane Mahoney: Can AI carry out assessments reliably and consistently? A comparison between AI and teacher grading.

Starting inclusive education: An interactive law example

Presenter: Michiel Duchateau and Barbara Brink

Description: This workshop discusses how lecturers can start teaching their courses in a more inclusive way without necessarily changing the learning aims of the course. It includes ‘successes’ and ‘failures’ from courses on law.

Autonomy and interaction in the active learning classroom

Presenter: Erika Darics

Description: This interactive workshop explores the transformative power of active learning pedagogy. The workshop - just like the educational practices we successfully tested for the second year in our Intercultural Communication course (offered to cca 160 students) - is grounded in evidence-based theories related to experiential learning. The hands-on workshop will allow participants not just to learn about but experience the activating potential of space, embodied learning and personal experience.

Teaching Research Methods through contextual and collaborative activities: Insights into course design and challenges

Presenter: Julia Martínez-Ariño

Description: In this workshop, we will explore the pedagogical benefits of contextual and collaborative learning in research methodology courses. We will delve into real-world case studies, extracting insights to inform effective course activities. Engaging in collaborative sessions, participants will design and share with the plenary contextually rich and engaging activities tailored to their research methodology courses. The workshop concludes with individual reflection to distil key insights and plans for application in their teaching practices.

The effect of cultural biases on the inclusive classroom

Presenter: Hanneke Boode

Diversity advocate Verna Meyers once described biases as “the stories we make up about people before we know who they actually are.” In this interactive workshop, we will explore these stories and discuss how we can alter some of the preconceptions we hold about others. In the second part of the workshop, we will specifically focus on cultural biases and their effect in and on our classrooms. We will discuss what it takes to break the bias habit in order to create an inclusive classroom.
