Inclusive Language Practice
As we gather to connect and share insights, research outcomes, and experiences during EuroSoTL 2025, it is essential that we foster an environment that is based on inclusivity and mutual respect. Language plays a crucial role in shaping our interactions and can either bridge gaps or create barriers. Therefore, we encourage all attendees to adopt inclusive language practices throughout our discussions, presentations, and networking opportunities.
We use inclusive language practices to acknowledge and respect the diverse identities of all participants, including varied genders, ethnicities, backgrounds and language proficiency levels. When everyone feels represented and respected in the language used, they are more likely to actively engage in discussions, share insights and connect with others. Inclusive language practices promote mutual understanding and foster a culture of learning.
Guidelines for Inclusive Language:
-
Acknowledge Diversity: Be mindful of cultural and linguistic differences and use language that is accessible to everyone, avoiding jargon or idiomatic expressions that may not be universally understood. Rephrasing in other languages may also aid in clarification. In small groups, we invite you to use your shared languages, as long as this does not exclude others.
-
Use Gender-Neutral Terms: Opt for inclusive terms such as "they/them" when referring to individuals whose preferred pronouns are unknown.
-
Respect Pronouns: Encourage the introduction of personal pronouns and be diligent in using them correctly.
-
Stay Open to Feedback: Create a welcoming atmosphere by inviting and being receptive to feedback about language use and discussions around inclusivity.
Together we can engage in dialogue that embraces plurality and fosters collaboration among SoTL scholars across Europe. By committing to inclusive language practice, we not only enhance our conference experience but also contribute to a broader culture of inclusion in academia.
