EuroSoTL 2025 will take place in the vibrant and young city of Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. Just two hours by train from Amsterdam the “Metropole of the North” is a city rich in cultural heritage and innovative spirit. The main sights of Groningen

The Martini tower

Discover the charm and vibrant culture of Groningen, a city that blends rich history with modern attractions. Whether you're a history buff, art enthusiast, or simply love exploring new places, Groningen has something for everyone.

Start your journey at the iconic Martinitoren. Named the “D’Olle Grieze,” the old grey one, by the locals, as the tallest building in the city it offers breathtaking panoramic views of Groningen from its top. Once you have climbed all the steps you will be rewarded with a stunning view of the city’s picturesque streets and canals including the city’s two main squares which form the heart of  Groningen’s historic center. Take a stroll over the bustling market on the Vismarkt to take a look at all the fresh produce on offer or take a look at the historic town hall and the Martinikerk located on the city’s main square, the Grote Markt.

Next, head to the Forum Groningen this cultural hub features a range of fascinating exhibitions, films, and events, with its rooftop providing a spectacular viewpoint of the city’s skyline. Inside you can also find the tourist information centre which is the perfect starting point for a walking tour of the many historic almshouse courtyards, locally known as "the Hofjes," these are former homes for the homeless, elderly and sick, that are present in the city.

Enjoy the parks of Groningen

Or enjoy the peace and quiet in one of the city's many green spaces and parks. Perfect to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax and enjoy nature. Among the most beloved parks are the Stadspark, Noorderplantsoen, and Prinsentuin, each offering its own unique charm.

The city’s main park, the Stadspark is a large, scenic park ideal for picnics, leisurely walks, or cycling. With its beautiful lakes, open spaces, and wooded areas, it’s the perfect place to escape and  unwind.

The Noorderplantsoen is a popular park, especially in the warmer months, known for its peaceful atmosphere and picturesque surroundings. The park is perfect for a stroll around its serene pond or a relaxing afternoon under the shade of its many trees. It’s a favorite hangout spot for locals and visitors alike.

For a more historic and beautifully manicured setting, visit the Prinsentuin, a charming Renaissance-style garden located in the heart of the city. With its geometric flowerbeds, fountains, and neatly trimmed hedges, this peaceful oasis offers a perfect place for quiet reflection or a romantic walk.

The Groninger Museum

The Groninger Museum is the city’s main museum worth a visit for the building itself alone. Located on the edge of the city centre on an island on the canal next to the main railway station of Groningen, the museum boasts a collection of both classic and contemporary art with a permanent collection of artists from the Ploeg, a local art movement from the beginning of the 20th century. Past and present exhibitions have included Rolling Stones Unzipped and How van Gogh came to Groningen highlighting the diversity of art and culture on offer at the institution.

Or visit the University of Groningen’s very own University Museum located next to the Academy building of the University. The museum’s exhibitions range from the history of science to fascinating displays of anatomical models, minerals, fossils, and old medical instruments. Making it an engaging visit for anyone keen to explore the history and cultural heritage of the University of Groningen. 

For those interested in local history, head to the Museum aan de Aa, located in a picturesque historic building along the river. This charming museum is dedicated to the cultural history of the region, offering visitors a fascinating look at the life and times of Groningen in the past and present.
