Otten, Prof. Bert
Bert Otten became professor by special appointment in Neuromechanics and Prosthetics at the Faculty of Medical Sciences via the Stichting Orthopedische Instrumentmakerij [Orthopaedic Instrument Manufacture Foundation] in 2005. This chair is part of the partnership between the Interfaculty Centre for Movement Sciences and the Centre for Rehabilitation. Otten studied biology at Leiden University and was awarded his PhD in 1982. His research focuses on the control of the human musculoskeletal system. He concentrates on the integration between biomechanical, perceptual and cognitive processes in the neural control of movements. This knowledge is used in the development of prostheses and rehabilitation. Otten also likes to discover other fields from the perspective of his scientific field of study: he is a photographer, software developer, inventor, entrepreneur with a company in the field of image processing, and a sportsman (he was University cycling champion in 1991) as well.
Otten regularly advises leading Dutch professional cyclists on how to use their bikes during time trials.
