Wubbo Ockels School will act as National Nominating Body for Frontiers Planet Prize
Wubbo Ockels School of Energy and Climate will act as a National Nominating Body, within Netherlands for the second edition of the Frontiers Planet Prize .
The Frontiers Planet Prize is a new international science competition where three prizes of 1 million CHF each are offered to exceptional scientists whose work actively contributes to accelerating solutions to keep humanity remain within the 9 planetary boundaries – a framework to safeguard our planetary health, as put forward by Prof Johan Rockström from the Potsdam Institute of Climate Change, Germany.
The 1st edition of the prize was launched by the Frontiers Research Foundation, a not-for-profit organization established in Lausanne, Switzerland. As a result, 233 Universities, 13 National Academies of Science, and a Jury of 100 planetary boundary scientists (with Professor Johan Rockström as Chairman) worked independently in selecting and recognizing, 20 National and 4 International Champions. A total of 3 million Swiss francs were awarded to the institutions of the International Champions, to accelerate their research in finding and scaling their solutions.
After the success of the first edition, the second edition was launched on Earth Day 2023 to allow more universities around the world to bring forward the scientists that work on planetary boundary science. Given University of Groningen’s current research activities across the domains of earth system science it has been selected to act as a National Nominating Body for the second edition of the Frontiers Planet Prize .
