The Future of Climate Adaptation: Research and innovation on climate risks
24-28 August 2026, Groningen, Netherlands
Global climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, including drought, heatwaves, and heavy rainfall that can cause flooding. Across the world, these events significantly affect livability, food security, economic stability, public health, and safety. Climate adaptation prepares societies and ecosystems to respond effectively to both long-term climate trends and extreme events.
The summer school, organised by Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, introduces participants to climate adaptation through an interdisciplinary curriculum covering engineering, economic, spatial, governance, and ecological perspectives.
Participants will address challenges and research questions linked to the Floating Future Project, which explores large-scale floating developments in the Netherlands as climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Application deadline: 8 May 2026
Energy Challenges - an interdisciplinary approach: Hydrogen economy as socio-technical challenge
24-28 August 2026, Groningen, Netherlands
With the pressing impact of emissions contributing to the warming of our planet, there's an urgent call to transition from fossil fuels (oil, gas, and coal) to cleaner, renewable energy sources. Despite this awareness, the pace of this energy transition is not as rapid as needed. What are the challenges?
This summer school delves into the future of a hydrogen economy and the social-technical challenges involved. We will explore the delays in implementing the necessary changes in the energy transition from an interdisciplinary perspective. Tailored towards for master students, researchers and professionals within the field, the summer school offers a first-hand exploration into the complexities of energy transition. Moreover, it provides an opportunity to engage with real-time energy challenges.
Application deadline: 17 April 2026
Public Participation in Sustainable Transitions: Energy island Ameland
24-28 August 2026, Groningen, Netherlands
Today’s urgent environmental issues, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and the depletion of natural resources, call for bold, creative thinking and collaboration across fields. So, the energy transition is not just a technical puzzle but also a social and environmental one.
This Summer School invites participants to break out of their disciplinary silos and discover how community engagement, public participation, and citizen empowerment can spark sustainable energy solutions for Ameland, a unique island in the Wadden Sea.
Application deadline: 8 May 2026
