The Future of Climate Adaptation: Research and innovation on climate risks
7 -11 July 2025, Groningen, Netherlands
The global climate is changing. We have to deal with more extreme weather conditions, such as drought, heat and extreme rainfall resulting in flooding. All over the world, climate change has a huge impact on our liveability, food supply, economy, health and safety. Climate adaptation focuses on adapting our societies and ecosystems to long-term climate trends and preparing for extreme weather events.
This summer school introduces participants into the complexity of challenges in climate adaptation from an interdisciplinary approach. The participants will go on an excursion to meet one of the stakeholders to learn about the real-time challenges they face in relation to climate adaptation, and visit the test facilities at Hanze University of Applied Sciences to test practical innovations on climate adaptation such as innovative pavements, raingardens, green roofs, bio-swales and other green infrastructure.
Application deadline: 1 May 2025
Energy Challenges - an interdisciplinary approach: Hydrogen economy as socio-technical challenge
25-29 August 2025, Groningen, Netherlands
With the pressing impact of emissions contributing to the warming of our planet, there's an urgent call to transition from fossil fuels (oil, gas, and coal) to cleaner, renewable energy sources. Despite this awareness, the pace of this energy transition is not as rapid as needed. What are the challenges?
This summer school delves into the future of a hydrogen economy and the social-technical challenges involved. We will explore the delays in implementing the necessary changes in the energy transition from an interdisciplinary perspective. Tailored towards for master students, researchers and professionals within the field, the summer school offers a first-hand exploration into the complexities of energy transition. Moreover, it provides an opportunity to engage with real-time energy challenges.
Application deadline: 30 April 2025
Public Participation in Sustainable Transitions: Energy island Ameland
25-29 August 2025, Groningen, Netherlands
The pressing environmental challenges of our time: climate change, biodiversity loss, and dwindling natural resources; demand innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to the energy transition. These challenges have technical, environmental and social components, and therefore the energy transition requires interdisciplinary approaches and collaboration across disciplines.
This Summer School embraces an interdisciplinary approach, encouraging participants to step beyond their own fields and explore the crucial role of community engagement, public participation, and citizen empowerment in shaping sustainable energy solutions for Ameland, an island in the Wadden Sea.
