He jointly directs the IHS (a leading institution in education, training and consultancy for mid-career professionals in developing countries) and RISBO (institute for educational research). Adriaan Hofman is appointed as Professor of Education, especially Higher Education at Groningen University in the Netherlands (http://www.rug.nl/ ). He specializes in School and Teacher Effectiveness, Higher Education, Education in Developing Countries, Research Methods, Urban Education and Learning Cities.
Adriaan Hofman was director of the University Education Expertise Centre of the University Groningen (UOCG) in the Netherlands. UOCG (http://www.uocg.nl) was responsible for teacher training, research and consultancy in higher and secondary education. The institute employed about 80 trainers, researchers and consultants from various disciplines.
Adriaan Hofman was till July 2005 Professor of Education Studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands (http://www.eur.nl). He was also responsible for the overall management of the Rotterdam Institute for Social Policy Research (RISBO) where about 25 researchers were employed. RISBO conducts research and development studies in the area’s of: primary, secondary and higher education, (higher) education and labour markets, social inequality (policy and effects), regional economics and urbanisation. Adriaan Hofman is the initiator of the Master in Policy Research at Erasmus University. He directed and coordinated this master programme till January 1st2005 www.masterbeleidsonderzoek.nl
During 2004 Adriaan Hofman was as general director also responsible for themanagement of the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) where about 35 national and international experts were employed. The Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies is an independent international institute (accredited as such by the Dutch government) offering post-graduate education, research and advisory services in the fields of Urban Management, Housing, Social and Education Studies, Governance and Urban Environmental Management.
Adriaan Hofman has been active as senior consultant in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He has been involved in the Think Tank of the Institute of Prognostic Technology Studies (IPTS, European Commission) on education issues of the Enlargement Countries (Bulgaria, Romania, the Baltic States, etc.) and the Mediterranean region. He is involved in several international research projects on issues regarding indicators of educational effectiveness. He was a member of the Advisory Committee “Rotterdam Education Plan 2002-2006” appointed by the City Council Rotterdam.
