dr. T. (Thijs) Janzen
Thijs Janzen was born on the 3rd of March 1985 in Amsterdam. He obtained his gymnasium (Grammar school) diploma in 2003 at the Barleaus Gymnasium in Amsterdam. Thijs continued by studying biology at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), and obtained his MSc. in 2009. After working for half a year as a research assistant, Thijs joined the COCON group at the University of Groningen as a PhD student in the summer of 2010, which resulted in his thesis “What Lies Beneath?”, which he defended on the 27th of March, 2015. In January 2015, Thijs started as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön, Germany, where he combined models and empirical data of hybridization dynamics on the genomic level in Cottus fish. At the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg Thijs has expanded his work on macro-genomic patterns of admixture in Cottus fish, during his stay there from 2017-2019. During 2019, Thijs has returned to the University of Groningen to work on the effect of substitution models on phylogenetic inference. Since 2020, Thijs is employed at the University of Groningen as Scientific Programmer.
