Research Focus - Technological change and digital transformation
Nicolai Fabian is an Assistant Professor of Information Systems (IS) at the University of Groningen. His research deals with technological change and the implications of digital technologies - specifically digital transformation. Specifically, he is interested in how emerging digital technologies (e.g., AI, cloud, Big Data) change organizations and what are the implications of such change. He works mostly with a quantitative approach and especially computational methods. For example, he uses web scraping but also machine learning to gather and analyze large datasets. Moreover, he is skilled in econometric techniques but also configurational methods such as fsQCA.
His work has been published in the European Journal of Information Systems, the Journal of Business Research, the Communications of the Association for Information Systems and is highly cited. He also presented his work at major conferences such as the AOM, ICIS, or ECIS. He also published and co-edited a free-access managerial eBook on digital transformation. Furthermore, he was a guest editor for a special issue on knowledge engineering in the Journal of Business Research. He is currently co-editing a book on AI and sustainability for Edward Elgar Publishing
In terms of service, he is (incoming) ERB member for Internet Research and serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for a range of IS journals. Moreover, he is the (incoming) treasuer for the special interest group digital innovation transformation and entrepreneurship (SIG DITE). At the faculty, he is the theme coordinator for the interdisciplinary theme on Digital/AI as well as the coordinator for the Focus Area on "Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence". He is also affiliated and works within the Groningen Digital Business Center (GDBC).
