EU CERV - WISE - Women in Solidarity for Energy (2024-2026)

From September 2024, I am leading Work Package 3 of the Women in Solidarity for Energy (WISE) project funded by the EU Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme for two years (total approx. 380.000 euros). WISE aims to improve knowledge on the right to energy within the European Union, and to disseminate this knowledge to the wider public and undertake action for solidarity. The project will have a specific focus on vulnerable groups of women, suffering disproportionally from energy poverty, i.e. women-headed households, elderly women, migrants/refugees, students. The project is run by NGOs and academic institutions from France, Netherlands, Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy, Croatia and Greece, but the project will engage women from the wider EU region. NWO Sectorplan - Energy Disconnections as Violations of Human Rights Law (2024-2025)

From September 2024, I will lead a small research project entitled "Energy Disconnections as Violations of Human Rights Law", including a focus on the "right to energy" specifically. This research is part of the National Research Council's (NWO) Sectorplan-funded theme Rethinking Public Responsiblities in Private Relationships. My project examines and compares law and case-law on household energy disconnections across Europe, including as violations of human rights, and examine ongoing/new regulatory efforts of EU Member States to prohibit energy companies from disconnecting vulnerable households from energy supplies in case of inability to pay, as a result of new EU legislation. YAG Grant - "On Just Transition, Sustainable Development, and Human Rights: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Lithium Extraction in the Lithium Triangle" (2024-2025)

From September 2024, Dr. Marlies Hesselman (LAW), Patricio Trincado Vera, LLM (LAW) Dr. Melissa Vergara Fernandez (FEB), Dr. Julia Doornbos (UCG) will jointly explore the intersections of just energy transition, sustainable development, human rights and decolonialisation of resource extraction in the Lithium Triangle in South-America through a lens of (human rights) law and policy, economics, philosophy (ethics), history and cultural geography. The project is funded through a Young Academy Groningen (YAG) Interdisciplinary Grant that provides seed funding for interdisciplinary collaboration on research and teaching. Besides an interdisciplinary literature review, the project will organise a workshop within the Business and Human Rights Group of the interdisciplinary Agricola School on Sustainable Development, and investigate opportunities for joint interdisciplinary teaching on this theme at Faculties of LAW, FEB and UCG.

ENGAGER - COVID Energy Map (2020-2023)

From 2020, I co-produced and managed the COVID-19 Global Energy Map: a unique evidenced-based global database of 380+ energy poverty laws and policies introduced in 120+ countries to ensure affordable and uninterupted household energy supplies during the crisis. It is a joint research effort under the EU ENGAGER network, funded by the EU Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) scheme, led by myself, Anaïs Varo (University of Girona), Rachel Guyet (Centre International de Formation Européenne-CIFE), Harriet Thomson (University of Birmingham). See www.covidenergymap.com.
