dr. ing. M.H.W. (Michiel) Hooiveld

Michiel H.W. Hooiveld is programme manager a.i., Data Science Center in Health (DASH), UMCG, staff advisor, Research Office, UMCG, and strategic advisor 'Health & Care', AI-hub North Netherlands.

Michiel Hooiveld studied Medical Microscopy Techniques at the HAN University of Applied Sciences, Medical Biology at Radboud University, Nijmegen, and obtained his PhD in Developmental Biology at the Hubrecht Institute, Utrecht University, in 1999. After his graduation he became policy advisor/project manager at the Council for Medical Sciences (Raad voor Medische Wetenschappen), Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), in Amsterdam. In 2002, he moved to Groningen and joined the Faculty of Medical Sciences/UMCG to become policy advisor at the Junior Scientific Masterclass (JSM), a stimulation program providing medical and dental students interested in doing scientific research extra opportunities in addition to their regular degree programme. In 2011, Michiel Hooiveld was appointed staff advisor at the Research Office. From 2011 until 2023, he provided support to the research institutes Brain and Cognition (neurosciences - 2011-2022), Cancer Research Center Groningen (oncology - 2012-2023), the W.J. Kolff institute (biomedical engineering and material science - 2022-2023), the Research School of Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN - 2011-2023), the Data Science Center in Health (DASH - 2019-...) and, on project basis, support to UMCG-wide projects, like the leading coalitions ‘ISO Certification’ (Nov. 2014 - Dec. 2015) and ‘Prestatiefinanciering’ (Nov. 2017 - Jan. 2019). His is currently appointed as programme manager DASH (a.i. - 2023-...) and staff advisor for the dean of research. Since January 2023 he is also Strategic Advisor 'Health & Care', AI-hub North Netherlands. His activities include managing the DASH programme and the DASH team, active within several UMCG work groups ('Sensing and monitoring', 'Robotics in healthcare', 'ChatGPT' and the Digital Health Education team), supporting and writing (strategic and/or policy) documents and grant applications, consultancy and networking.
