Eelko Huizingh’s research focuses on the intersection of innovation & entrepreneurship, marketing and information technology. He has a broad research interest and is currently involved in numerous studies, including projects on portfolio management, open innovation effectiveness, online innovation contests, Valley of Death, wicked problem solving, and humor & creativity. He has consulted for various companies in different sectors on issues related to innovation, e-commerce strategy, and marketing strategy.

Besides the usual triplet of teaching, research and management, his tasks also included coaching. For a decade, he had the formal role of coach to help other (junior and senior) researchers to get the best out of their talents.

Eelko Huizingh has (co-)authored well over 500 articles in a broad range of journals, including Journal of Product Innovation Management, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Marketing Science, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Technovation, R&D Management, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Journal of Retailing, Information & Management, International Journal of Technology Management, European Journal of Innovation Management, International Journal of Innovation Management, Marketing Letters, and Decision Support Systems. He also writes regularly for regional news outlets, such as Dagblad van het Noorden and RTVNoord.

His most often cited academic papers are:

  • Open innovation: State of the art and future perspectives, Technovation, 2011 (vol. 31, 1, p. 2-9).  Citations: ISI: 961, Scopus: 1240, Google Scholar: 2782. It was the most often downloaded article from Technovation in 2011, 2012 and 2014 (2nd in 2013), and the most often cited article in 2015.
  • The Content and Design of Web Sites, Information & Management, 2000 (Vol. 37, 3, p. 123-134). Citations: ISI: 283, Scopus: 440, Google Scholar: 1166.
  • When Is Open Innovation Beneficial? The Role of Strategic Orientation, Journal of Product Innovation Management, 2014 (vol. 31, 6, p. 1235-1253). Citations: ISI: 266, Scopus: 311, Google Scholar: 609.

With co-authors Koen Pauwels, Peter Leeflang, and Marije Teerling, he is the winner of the 2013 Davidson Award for the best paper published in the Journal of Retailing.

Dr. Huizingh has been guest editor of over 40 special issues of academic journals, including International Journal of Innovation Management, Technovation, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, R&D Management, International Journal of Technology Management, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, and International Journal of Technology Marketing. He has (co-)authored Dutch textbooks on Innovation Management, Marketing Management, the impact of the Internet, the use of SPSS, and Marketing Information Systems. Sage published his book Applied Statistics with SPSS.

His most recent book is Unlocking PhD Success: How to Acquire Crucial PhD Skills, published by Springer (2023).

Dr. Huizingh is Fellow of of ISPIM (International Society for Professional Innovation Management), the leading innovation management association in Europe (since 2023). He was Vice President Scientific Affairs of ISPIM from 2007-2023. His duties included Head of the Scientific Panel, for reviewing conference submissions, and Head of the ISPIM Innovation Management Dissertation Award Panel, for selecting the best PhD thesis in innovation management.

From 2015-2021 he was Director of the Innovation Centre of Expertise Vinci at the University of Groningen. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Otago, New Zealand (2005, 2003), and at Penn State University, USA (2000). In 1992 he received his Ph.D., awarded for a dissertation on the evolution of Marketing Information Systems in recent decades.

Additional Activities

Eelko Huizingh was Chair of the Programme Committee for the Master of Science Business Administration (2012-2015) and the Faculty Council, Faculty of Economics, University of Groningen (1998-2003), authored a monthly column on Interactive Marketing in Tijdschrift voor Marketing (1998-2002), and was member of the Customer Base editorial board (1995-2003). He was project manager for Maintenance of Customer Databases (1998) and co-organizer of the International Conference on Customer-Based Marketing, Groningen, 17-18 September 1998. He participated in the Marketing Decision Support Systems research projects sponsored by NIMA (1989-1994), and in The Internet for Commercial Communication sponsored by the DMSA (1997-1998).

Dr. Huizingh serves as ad hoc reviewer for Research Policy, Technovation, R&D Management, Decision Support Systems, Electronic Commerce Research, Internet Research, ACM Transactions on Internet Technology, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Management Research News, and EMAC, ISPIM and HICSS Conferences.
