Anke Huckriede studied cell biology at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, where she graduated in 1986. In 1990 she received a PhD in cell biology from the same university with a thesis on the regulation of the cytoskeleton in healthy and in tumor cells (magna cum lause). In the same year she joined the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, where she worked as a postdoc first on mitochondrial diseases, later on vaccine development.

In 2011 she was appointed Professor of Vaccinology at the Department of Microbiology & Infection Prevention, University Medical Center Groningen. Currently, her interest is in rational vaccine design. Her work on (influenza) vaccines aims at improving immune responses to vaccines by generating knowledge on the effects of pre-existing immunity on vaccine-induced responses, by elucidating the role of vaccine composition and of host-specific factors on the magnitude and quality of immune responses, and by developing new vaccine administration forms. In her work she makes use of novel animal-free in vitro techniques for vaccine evaluation.

Anke Huckriede has been involved in various national and international consortia as participant, work package leader or co-coordinator.
