Social networks and the resilience of marginalized communities. Talk by dr. Miranda Lubbers, Autonomous University of Barcelona

In the context of growing inequalities, dr. Lubbers assesses how social networks shape the resilience of marginalized, disadvantaged groups in society, including undocumented migrants.

Drawing on various theories, dr. Lubbers discusses how networks can strengthen people’s reactive, adaptive, and transformative capacities to cope with adversities and sustain well-being, but also perpetuate and exacerbate inequalities. She then sets a research agenda calling for greater attention to power differentials in unequal relationships, intersectionality in network analysis, the contextual embeddedness of network effects, and how networks can transform the social arrangements that produce marginalization.
