Lunch seminar Disaster Resilience: Supply chain resilience and the role of teams in dealing with disruptions

On Thursday 31 March 2022 we organize a hybrid seminar together with the Disaster Resilience theme entitled: 'Supply chain resilience and the role of teams in dealing with disruptions'.

Prof. Dirk Pieter van Donk will talk about supply chain management and resilience on small and recurring disruptions.

The seminar will shortly explain some basic notions on supply chain (SC) management, and supply chain resilience, explaining some of the topical areas investigated in that context and different approaches chosen in terms of empirical approach. Next, we will focus on research that specifically considers collaboration in and between (cross-functional) teams in SCs that are confronted with adverse events and try to limit their effect on the performance of the organizations they work in. The idea is to sketch some of the context, approaches and results of two interdisciplinary studies that respectively (1) use data from a railway organization and (2) students and managers that acted in a realistic business simulation. As in the SC literature (as in other fields) the effects of and reaction to large disasters have been investigated mostly, our work will specifically address smaller and more recurring disruptions.

Prof. Dirk Pieter van Donk

Dirk Pieter van Donk is a Professor in Operations Management in the Department Operations, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Groningen, The Netherlands. He teaches and taught a number of courses in Production/Operations Management both at the undergraduate and graduate level. His main research areas are Supply Chain Management and Integration, and planning/scheduling in the (food) processing industries. In the field of Supply Chain Management the main research questions relate to a better understanding of supply chain integration: the need for it, its dimensions, the relationship with ICT, and the effects on performance, along with resilience and sustainability in supply chains.

Currently he is Associate Editor of the Journal of Operations Management, and of the International Journal of Operations & Production Management. He organized international conferences and workshops and edited a special issue for JOM and four for IJOPM.
