2. Obtaining funding
Before they can be admitted to the PhD programme of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, prospective PhD candidates must secure means to support themselves throughout the course of the project. There are several ways to do so:
Funding by UG salary |
Professors sometimes obtain funding from research organisations or partners from industry to hire PhD candidates. These PhD positions are advertised whenever one becomes available. The positions are typically tied to a defined research project and will be offered to the candidate who is best suited to carry out the project. The selected candidate subsequently becomes an employee of the University of Groningen for the duration of the project. |
Funding by other scholarship |
Many governments offer scholarships for talented candidates that wish to pursue a PhD project abroad (for example the Chinese CSC programme, the Indonesian LPDP programme, or the Mexican CONACYT programme). PhD candidates who would like to come to the University of Groningen with such a scholarship and who meet the admission requirements should first of all find a prospective supervisor in one of the research institutes of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Accepted candidates whose scholarship is lower than approximately 2000 euros can receive an additional scholarship from the University of Groningen. |
Funding from employer |
Some employers are willing to give their employees time to pursue a PhD project. Prospective candidates in this situation who would like to gain admission to the PhD programme should first make sure they meet the admission requirements and if so look for a prospective supervisor. |
Personal funding |
If their circumstances permit it, candidates can also decide to support themselves financially throughout the course of the project. After making sure they meet the admission requirements, prospective candidates in this situation who would like to gain admission to the PhD programme should look for a prospective supervisor. |
