Outreach

At CRASIS, our commitment to sharing knowledge extends beyond academic circles into the broader community through our dedicated outreach initiatives. These programs are designed to engage a diverse audience, including educators, researchers and students, bringing the richness of ancient studies into contemporary settings.

Highlights from Previous Outreach

  • Workshop for High-School Teachers: During the 12th edition of the Certamen Septentrionale in Leek, a translation competition for northern high-school students in Greek and Latin from years five and six, PhD students Friederike Brunzema and Hylke de Boer conducted a workshop for high-school teachers. Hylke presented his PhD project FACERE, which ties into the final high-school exam theme focusing on Virgil's Aeneid, particularly the forging of Aeneas' weapons in Vulcan's smithy. Friederike introduced an experimental, yet successful, game to acquaint teachers with a topic from her PhD thesis on Nestor's Cup in Athenaeus' Deipnosophistae.

  • Escape Room for Students: While teachers were busy with translation corrections, Hylke de Boer organized an escape room with David Lettink and Tom Withaar for the students. Participants had to complete tasks such as working with academic dictionaries and deciphering Greek or Latin inscriptions to simulate the life of a classics student at Groningen. Every group succeeded in their tasks and earned a well-deserved reward.

  • Week van de Klassieken Events:
