How does the legal framework affect the development of offshore wind energy?

-

Dr Ceciel Nieuwenhout conducts research on offshore infrastructure.

Many offshore wind farms will be built in the coming decades, with the aim of combating harmful climate change and ending dependence on fossil energy. In her research on offshore infrastructure, Ceciel is primarily looking at the role of the legal framework. What legal frameworks facilitate cooperation between countries and between companies? How do we ensure that switching stations from different producers can be linked together? How does the legal framework for floating wind farms work? And what can be done to actually bring the innovations envisioned in this area into practice?

Ceciel's research focuses on answering those questions. Her research is complemented by insights from technical, political, economic and even ecological perspectives.

Ceciel Nieuwenhout is an associate professor of Energy law. Her research focuses on two pillars: 1. The legal aspects of energy transition in the built environment in the context of positive energy districts and 2. The legal afspects of the development of (offshore) HVDC power grids and their interoperability. She is also a Council member at the Municipality of Groningen and a member of the editorial board of Scientific Bureau GroenLinks.

In this video Ceciel tells more about her research and its outcomes.
