Wellbeing, Diversity and Inclusion
The University of Groningen wants to be a university where staff members and students feel at home and feel respected. Diversity is part of the academic community, and therefore differences (in perspective and experience) should be recognized, utilized and properly facilitated in order to help reach individuals’ full potential, as well as that of the organization.
WDI Policy
With the WDI policy, we would like to strengthen the conscience and support students and staff to have open discussions on well-being, diversity and inclusion. This way, we hope to add to a welcoming, safe and more inclusive work and study environment. We aim for more diversity and inclusion because this suits the societal role of an academic, legal Faculty. Diverse perspectives give diversity to knowledge, experience and research questions, which improves education and research at the Faculty.
WDI Committee
From January 2022 onwards, the Office for Wellbeing, Diversity & Inclusion has put together a committee. In this committee, matters regarding WDI at the Faculty of Law will be discussed once in two/three months. The committee consists of international and Dutch students in different phases of their bachelors/masters and staff members.
The intersection of Wellbeing, Diversity and Inclusion
What is the intersection of wellbeing, diversity, and inclusion? The ability for a person to thrive in their study and work environment is inextricably linked to their sense of identity and belonging in that environment. This link works both ways. From one direction, members of communities that have high levels of well-being tend to be more inclusive. From the other direction, work and study places that value and celebrate the unique individuals in their communities also enhance their well-being. Our vision for the Faculty of Law is that of a diverse and inclusive culture that is grounded in well-being.
The official mission statement of the Office for Well-being, Diversity and Inclusion reads:
'The Well-being, Diversity & Inclusion Office seeks to cultivate an environment with a high level of awareness and commitment to well-being, diversity, and inclusion that
- includes individuals who represent a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and characteristics
- actively values and encourages each individual’s unique identity and
- supports a sustainable culture of belonging and equitable treatment of all members, so that all members of the Faculty of Law can thrive
The office does this through providing input on policies, facilitating connections between diverse groups, providing training, and developing best practices.'
