Development of the Network
Origin
The GSNLT is a development of the European Scientific Network on Law and Tobacco (ESNLT). This original network was an academic network primarily of and for legal scholars in Europe with a clear outreach to policy and practice. The ESNLT was supported by key partners including the Dutch Cancer Society, Kom op tegen Kanker, Norwegian Cancer Society, ASH Action on Smoking & Health, Belgian Alliance for a Smoke Free Society, and the Tobacco Control Research Group from the University of Bath. All of the ESNLT activities were organized with financial support from the Dutch Cancer Society.
Current Network
Currently, the Network has expanded to a global scope, and the project is now funded by the University of Queensland. The now global extent of the network enables a greater collection of research and a more elaborate knowledge exchange. Focus is placed on the human rights dimension of tobacco control, as well as opportunities for litigation. As such, low and middle income countries are especially important to consider, as this is where generally the tobacco industry has significant influence and regulation remains underdeveloped.
On the 31st of May 2024, Stephanie and Maartje presented the GSNLT at the SNRT Conference organized by the University of Queensland. The video presentation can be viewed below.
