1. Check whether you are admissable

Students who meet the following cumulative requirements are admissible to the shortened Bachelor ’Rechtsgeleerdheid’:

  1. Completion of the propaedeutic phase of the English-taught Bachelor International and European Law at the University of Groningen;
  2. Sufficient command of the Dutch language, entry level C1 Dutch, as demonstrated by a Dutch VWO diploma, VWO certificate in Dutch or NT2 certificate.

If you have any questions about your admissibility, please contact the Admissions Board: toelating-rechten rug.nl.

Please note: students from the Technology Law track will need to take an additional 25 ECTS to be eligible for this shortened Bachelor's degree programme.

Already completed the entire English-taught Bachelor International and European Law and obtained your Bachelor's degree? Then this shortened Bachelor ’Rechsgeleerdheid’ is a second programme at the same degree level. Before applying, check the tuition fees on the UG website (Institutional Tuition Fee II).

2. Apply in Studielink

Please note: the national application deadline of 1 May only applies to prospective propaedeutic students, not to prospective students of the shortened Bachelor ‘Rechtsgeleerdheid’!

The application procedure only really starts with your application in Studielink. The sooner you do this, the sooner we can take care of everything on our end. Ideally, you should apply no later than six weeks before the start of the academic year, to assure that everything will be arranged for in time.

After you have logged in to Studielink, choose a new enrolment.

  • Indicate that you want to start in September
  • at the University
  • for the Bachelor's degree or other Non-Master's degree programme
  • you will not start in the first year
  • at the University of Groningen
  • with the Bachelor 'Rechtsgeleerdheid'
  • choose Groningen as location
  • and choose full-time as your preferred study mode
3. Apply at the Faculty

After you have completed all components of the propaedeutic phase of the English-taught Bachelor's degree programme (all results can be found in Progress), passed the NT2 or equivalent, and applied in Studielink, you must inform the Admissions Board that you wish to enrol for the shortened Bachelor ‘Rechtsgeleerdheid. You can do so by sending an e-mail to the Admissions Board (toelating-rechten rug.nl) with your name and student number. The Admissions Board will then check whether you are indeed eligible for admission. Make sure you have met all admission requirements at the time of your e-mail to the Admissions Board.

If your application is approved, the Admissions Board will complete a Completion Examination Grant Declaration (the so-called ‘VTAE’) and will send that to the UG Student Information and Administration Office (SIA) for you. They will process your application there, so there is no need for you to contact us about your application. If you have any questions, you can of course email us: toelating-rechten rug.nl. If you would like to discuss your planning, please send an e-mail to studieadvies-rechten rug.nl.

4. Enrol for courses and working groups

Just like for the post-propaedeutic courses of the English-taught Bachelor, you can also enrol for the courses and working groups of the shortened Bachelor ‘Rechtsgeleerdheid’. Please check the academic calendar in time to see which registration periods apply.

Please note: enrolling for the Student Moot Court in blocks 3 and 4 takes place before block 1. Entry requirements for the Student Moot Court are cumulative:

  • a minimum of 90 ECTS (including courses from the English-language Bachelor's programme)
  • you must have passed the propaedeutic courses of the shortened Bachelor ‘Rechtsgeleerdheid’ (‘Burgerlijk Recht 1’, ‘Strafrecht 1’, ‘Bestuursrecht: Inleiding’, and ‘Staatsrecht 1’).

Therefore, in general, the Student Moot Court can only be taken in the second year of enrolment for the shortened Bachelor ‘Rechtsgeleerdheid’.

5. Arrange your payment

You pay regular tuition fees for the shortened Bachelor's degree programme. Just like for the English-taught Bachelor's, the payment of the tuition fees has to be arranged before 1 September.

If you are also registered in the English-taught Bachelor's degree programme, you will pay one tuition fee for both Bachelors combined as an EU student. If you are a non-EU student, or have already completed the English-taught Bachelor's degree programme, different rates apply. You can find all the current fees on the website of Student Information and Administration (SIA).

6. Submit your list of courses

You must submit your list of courses for the shortened Bachelor ‘Rechtsgeleerheid, track ‘Internationaal en Europees Recht’ in Progress by 1 October at the latest. Add all shortened Bachelor ‘Rechtsgeleerheid’ courses to the list of courses (look up the course codes in Ocasys), including the courses for which you have requested/will request an exemption. For more information on how to fill in this list of courses, please refer to the Law Knowledge Base. You will need to apply for these exemptions yourself after completing the English-taught Bachelor's degree programme. You can do this by means of this form.
