Groningen attractive to international students

The University of Groningen (UG) is successful at recruiting new international students. The number of new Dutch students is also rising. On 1 October 2016, the UG had 28,756 students, an increase of 2.5% compared to last year. There were a total of 30,710 registrations for a degree programme at the UG. The UG’s market share in the Netherlands remains the same, 3rd position.
4972 new students registered for the propaedeutic phase (22.4% from abroad), and 805 registered for the Master’s phase (23.8% from abroad). The total number of new registrations is 6513, including for the pre-Master's programmes. Compared to last year, this is an increase of 10.5%.
Number of international students rises again
1993 new international students have registered for academic year 2016-2017, an increase of 16.7%. In total, 4983 students from abroad are now studying at the UG, 17.3% of the total number of registered students.
Over a hundred different countries
1896 of the 4983 international students come from Germany. The remaining 3087 international students come from well over a hundred different countries. In second place is the United Kingdom (310), followed by China (288). Then come Italy, Romania, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Greece and Spain.
Once-off effect of student loan system
The number of new Dutch students has risen to 3675, an increase of 262. Last year we saw a slight decrease in the number of new Dutch students. The introduction of the new student loan system seems thus to have had a once-off effect. The total number of Dutch students is now 23,773.
Popular degree programmes
The degree programmes with the greatest increase in the actual number of registered students are the Bachelor’s programmes in Economics & Business Economics and in Law (both up by 124 students), the Bachelor in Media Studies introduced last year (up by 100) and the Bachelor in Liberal Arts and Sciences of University College Groningen (up by 84). The faculties with the greatest increases are Mathematics and Natural Sciences (up by 352) and Arts (up by 249). Numbers at University College have also risen sharply.
Male to female ratio
The male to female ratio among students has remained about the same. There are slightly more women (51.3%) than men. This is also the case for the first registrations (53.6%).
